A male nanny, sometimes referred to as a 'manny' is a professional childcare provider who works within a private household, supporting children’s day-to-day care, routines, and development. In the UK, male nannies are still relatively uncommon, but they are increasingly sought after by families looking for structure, continuity, and a calm, consistent presence.

In my experience working within private households, the role itself is no different than any other qualified nanny. The focus is on providing safe, consistent care, supporting children’s wellbeing, and working in line with a family’s expectations and values. What often differs is the dynamic a male nanny brings to the household, rather than the duties themselves.

In practical terms, a male nanny may support daily routines such as mornings, meals, school transitions, homework time, and evenings. They may also be involved in organising activities, encouraging independence, and helping children develop positive habits. In private households, the role is usually shaped around the specific needs of the family rather than a fixed job description.

Families choose male nannies for a range of reasons. Some are looking to introduce a positive male role model into the household, particularly where children respond well to clear boundaries and consistency. Others value the balance a male nanny can bring alongside existing staff or within family structures where parents travel frequently. In many cases, the decision comes down to personality, experience, and trust.

Some families require a broader level of responsibility, often referred to as proxy parenting. A proxy parent provides parental-level oversight when parents are absent, ensuring routines, expectations, and boundaries are maintained consistently. You can read more about the role of a proxy parent here.

As with any childcare role, professional standards and safeguarding are central. Families should expect appropriate background checks, relevant experience, clear references, and a strong understanding of professional boundaries. In practice, suitability for the family and the children is always the most important consideration.

A male nanny can be a strong fit for families who value structure, continuity, and a calm, professional presence within the household. As with any private household appointment, clarity of expectations and alignment in approach are key to a successful placement.
